Bee Facts

- The majority of the bees in the hive are female bees. They are worker bees and of course the Queen Bee.

- The male bees are called drones. Nobody really knows the purpose of drone bees other than to mate with Queens from other hives in the area.

- The worker bees kick the drones out of the hive in the Winter. The drones then die off because they have nowhere to go. This saves the colony a lot of food when they need it most because they can't otherwise go out and forage nectar or pollen at this time of year.

- Drones come from unfertilized eggs which the Queen will lay in larger comb cells because the drones are larger than the typical worker bee.

- Drone bees have no stinger.

- The Queen bee, while very unlikely to sting you, is the only bee that can sting more than once because she doesn't have a barbed stinger. She uses her stinger to kill other Queens in the Hive.

- Because the worker bees have a barbed stinger, they will die after using their stinger.

- From the time that the egg is laid, It takes a Queen about 16 days to emerge from her cell. It takes worker bees about 21 days and takes drones about 24 days.

- Honey bees have an average lifespan of 6 weeks. While they can live much longer in the Winter when they're stuck in the hive, foraging for Pollen and Nectar in the warmer months takes a toll on their life span.

- Although a Queen can live 7 or more years, the average lifespan of a Queen bee is approximately 3 years.

- The Queen can lay as many as 3,000 eggs in one day during peak season.

- A forager bee visits 50-100 flowers during 1 collection trip.

- Forager bees collect nectar from approximately 2 million flowers to make 1 pound of Honey.

- Foragers will fly equivalent to approximately 45,000 miles to make 1 pound of Honey.

- The average forager bee will make approximately 1/12th of a teaspoon of Honey in her lifetime.

- It takes approximately 7 pounds of Honey to produce 1 pound of Wax. So to a beekeeper and their bees, wax (comb) is more valuable than Honey. This is why comb Honey or Chunk Honey (Honey containing comb in the jar) will usually cost more.

- In Croatia, Researchers have learned to train honey bees to detect land mines. With their incredible sense of smell, Scientists have trained them to sniff out TNT, which is the most common explosive used in land mines.

- Archeologists reported that they found 3,000 year old Honey while excavating tombs in Ancient Egypt. The Honey was still perfectly edible.

- While some types of Honey will crystalize more easily than others, it is perfectly normal for Pure Raw Honey to crystalize.

- Honey bees are responsible for approximately 80% of all Fruit, Vegetable and Seed crops in the United States.

- Beeswax candles burn cleaner than any other candle.
